The Council of Europe's objective is to guarantee human rights, democracy and the rule of law for European citizens. In addition to promoting this, it is also appropriate to emphasise the need to strengthen the monitoring of the fulfilment of the commitments made upon accession to the Council of Europe and of the commitments contained in the Council of Europe Conventions in matters of priority importance for our country. It is of decisive importance that the protection of national minorities, which entails legal obligations, exists only in the Council of Europe. We therefore aim to give the two relevant conventions (the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities), as part of the human rights pillar, the importance they deserve, and we will therefore pay increased attention to the fulfilment of the commitments they contain. From the Hungarian point of view, we are also taking care that in the protection of various vulnerable social groups, the issue of national minorities is not relegated to the background in the forums of the Council of Europe.
